Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was trained by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of an elementary school student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
